What is the Rugby World Cup trophy officially called?
Answer
Webb Ellis Cup
Answer
Webb Ellis Cup
The Rugby World Cup trophy is officially called the Webb Ellis Cup.
The trophy is named after William Webb Ellis, the Rugby School pupil traditionally credited with picking up the ball and running with it during a football match in 1823. The story is famous, although historians have questioned whether the incident can be verified.
The silver trophy was first awarded at the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987. It is made of silver gilt, features two handles, and includes a figure of Nike, the winged goddess of victory, on its top.
The Webb Ellis Cup should not be confused with other famous rugby trophies. The Calcutta Cup is contested by England and Scotland, while the Bledisloe Cup is played for by Australia and New Zealand.
