What is the Roman name for the god Hermes?

The story behind the answer

The Roman name for the god Hermes is Mercury.

Greek Hermes and Roman Mercury were closely identified, though each developed within a different religious tradition. Hermes was the Greek god of messengers, travel, commerce, boundaries, eloquence and trickery; Mercury inherited these roles in Roman religion. His name is linked to the Latin merx, meaning “merchandise,” fitting his association with trade.

Mercury was not simply a renamed messenger. Roman worship gave him distinct civic importance, especially through the Mercuralia festival, celebrated on May 15. Merchants visited his temple near the Circus Maximus and sprinkled themselves and their goods with water from a sacred spring.

A common mix-up is confusing Mercury with the planet or the chemical element bearing the same name. Both were named after the swift Roman god: the planet’s rapid apparent movement recalled his speed, while the element’s old alchemical symbol was associated with him. In Greek mythology, however, the equivalent figure is Hermes.
