What is the process of removing dead skin cells from the body called?

The story behind the answer

The process of removing dead skin cells from the body is called exfoliation.

Skin naturally sheds cells from its outermost layer, but some dead cells can remain on the surface and contribute to a rough or dull appearance. Exfoliation speeds or assists that shedding. In skincare, it may be mechanical, using a scrub, brush, pad, or similar tool, or chemical, using ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, or other keratolytic agents.

The word describes a process, while an exfoliant is the product or substance used to perform it. Dermaplaning and microdermabrasion are specific cosmetic techniques that exfoliate, but they are not synonyms for every form of exfoliation.

More exfoliation is not automatically better. Excessive scrubbing or frequent use of strong acids can irritate skin and weaken its protective barrier. The appropriate method depends on the body area, skin sensitivity, and product strength.
