What is the Osaka terminus of the Tokaido Shinkansen?
Answer
Shin-Osaka
Answer
Shin-Osaka
The Osaka terminus of the Tokaido Shinkansen is Shin-Osaka Station.
Shin-Osaka is the western endpoint of the Tokaido Shinkansen, which runs eastward to Tokyo. The line opened in 1964, just before the Tokyo Olympics, and helped establish Japan’s Shinkansen as a model for high-speed passenger rail. Although the station is in Osaka, it is separate from the older Osaka Station in the city center.
The station was built in Yodogawa-ku, roughly 3 kilometres north of Osaka Station. This location made it easier to construct the high-speed line without forcing the Shinkansen through the denser central district. Passengers can continue into central Osaka using the JR Kyoto Line or Osaka Metro’s Midosuji Line.
Shin-Osaka is also the eastern terminus of the Sanyo Shinkansen toward Hakata and Fukuoka. That connection creates through services between Tokyo and destinations in western Japan, so travelers may stay on the same train even though the Tokaido and Sanyo routes are operated as separate lines.
