What is the original language of Fawlty Towers?

The story behind the answer

The original language of Fawlty Towers is English.

Fawlty Towers is a British sitcom written and performed primarily in English. It was broadcast by BBC Two in two short series: the first in 1975 and the second in 1979. The programme contains occasional words and phrases from other languages, especially through Manuel, the Spanish waiter, but its original production language is English.

The show’s language is central to several of its comic situations. Manuel’s confused English, Basil’s frantic explanations, and Sybil’s sharply delivered interruptions create much of the series’ verbal farce. Manuel is presented as Spanish and speaks English imperfectly, though actor Andrew Sachs was German-born and had emigrated to Britain as a child.

A dubbed version is not the same thing as the original language. Fawlty Towers has been adapted or dubbed for international audiences, and some versions change character details, but the original BBC production remains an English-language programme.
