What is the official U.S. Code section that lists Veterans Day as a legal public holiday?

The story behind the answer

Veterans Day is listed as a legal public holiday in 5 U.S.C. § 6103(a).

Title 5 of the United States Code contains provisions concerning government organization and employees. Section 6103 identifies the legal public holidays observed by federal employees, including Veterans Day on November 11.

The statute also sets rules for how federal holidays are observed when they fall on a Saturday or Sunday. Under those rules, a Saturday holiday is generally observed on the preceding Friday, while a Sunday holiday is generally observed on the following Monday for many federal scheduling purposes.

This legal citation is different from the statutes that renamed Armistice Day, created veterans’ benefits, or established military commemorative programs. The U.S. Code citation explains the holiday’s federal legal status rather than its historical origin.
