What is the official language of Iran?

The story behind the answer

Persian is the official language of Iran. It is also known as Farsi in Iran and belongs to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family.

Modern Persian developed from earlier forms of the language, including Middle Persian, which was used during the Sasanian period. Persian literature has a long and influential tradition, with major poets such as Ferdowsi, Hafez, Saadi, and Rumi.

Iran’s Persian is written in a modified Arabic script. The writing system includes additional letters for sounds not represented in standard Arabic, and Persian vocabulary has absorbed words from Arabic, Mongolian, French, and other languages.

Iran is multilingual. Azeri, Kurdish, Arabic, Luri, Balochi, and Turkmen are among the languages spoken by communities across the country. Arabic is important religiously and regionally, but it is not Iran’s official language.
