The company's origins trace to the California-Arabian Standard Oil Company, established in 1933. The name became Arabian American Oil Company, or Aramco, before the Saudi government gradually acquired ownership during the 1970s and completed nationalization in 1980.

Saudi Aramco is associated with the Ghawar oil field, widely described as the world's largest conventional oil field by certain measures. Its 2019 initial public offering on the Saudi Exchange was one of the largest stock-market listings ever, although the government retained majority ownership.
