What is the official currency of Vatican City?

The official currency of Vatican City is the euro.

Vatican City uses the euro through a monetary agreement with the European Union, despite being neither an EU member nor a member of the eurozone. The arrangement allows the city-state to use euro notes and coins and to issue a limited number of its own euro coins.

Vatican euro coins are especially recognizable to collectors because their national designs feature the pope or other Vatican symbols. The coins are minted in Italy and carry the inscription “Città del Vaticano.” Vatican City does not issue its own euro banknotes, so ordinary euro notes circulate alongside its distinctive coins.

Before the euro, Vatican coinage was denominated in the Vatican lira, which was tied at par to the Italian lira. Euro accounting began in 1999, and euro notes and coins entered everyday circulation on 1 January 2002. “Vatican scudo” is a historical monetary term, not the current currency; the Swiss franc and Italian lira are not official currencies today.
