What is the official currency of Kuwait?

The story behind the answer

The official currency of Kuwait is the Kuwaiti dinar.

The Kuwaiti dinar is divided into 1,000 fils, an unusually fine subdivision compared with many currencies that use 100 smaller units. It is issued by the Central Bank of Kuwait and is represented internationally by the code KWD.

Kuwait introduced the dinar in 1961, replacing the Gulf rupee that had circulated in the region. The word “dinar” derives from the Roman denarius and is used by several countries, which can cause confusion in currency questions.

The Kuwaiti dinar is frequently described as the world’s highest-valued currency unit by nominal exchange rate against the US dollar, although exchange rates change continually. That distinction concerns the value of one currency unit, not the size or strength of an economy.
