What is the official currency of Denmark?

The story behind the answer

The official currency of Denmark is the Danish krone.

The krone, whose plural is kroner, is divided into 100 øre. Its international currency code is DKK, and the symbol “kr” is commonly used in prices. Denmark is a member of the European Union but has an opt-out from adopting the euro, so the krone remains its national currency.

The modern Danish krone was introduced in 1875 as part of the Scandinavian Monetary Union. That union linked the currencies of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway to gold, but it dissolved during the First World War. The three countries’ currencies continued separately afterward.

Danish banknotes and coins feature designs connected with Danish history and culture. The krone should not be confused with the Swedish krona or Norwegian krone, which are separate currencies with different codes and designs.
