What is the obligatory charity paid at the end of Ramadan called?

The story behind the answer

Zakat al-Fitr is the obligatory charity paid at the end of Ramadan.

It is also known as Sadaqat al-Fitr or simply Fitrana in some communities. The payment is connected with Eid al-Fitr and is traditionally made before the Eid prayer so that people in need can take part in the festival.

Classical descriptions specify a fixed measure of staple food, often called a sa', rather than a percentage of accumulated wealth. Modern Muslim authorities and communities may permit or calculate a cash equivalent, with the amount varying by location and local food prices.

Zakat al-Fitr differs from zakat on wealth, often called Zakat al-Mal. The latter is an annual obligation for qualifying wealth, while Zakat al-Fitr is linked specifically to the completion of Ramadan.
