The New York City Subway’s official contactless payment system is called OMNY.
OMNY, short for One Metro New York, allows riders to pay subway and bus fares with contactless bank cards, supported mobile wallets, or an OMNY card. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority introduced the system as the successor to the MetroCard.
The first OMNY readers entered service in 2019 on selected routes. The rollout expanded across the subway and bus network, and the MTA planned the retirement of MetroCard after OMNY became the principal fare-payment platform.
OMNY is not a separate train service or fare category. It is the payment technology used to access transit. Riders can tap a card or device on the reader, while transfer and fare-capping rules are handled by the fare system. MetroCard remains an important historical predecessor, but it is not the current contactless brand.
