What is the name of Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell car? It is the Toyota Mirai.

“Mirai” means “future” in Japanese. Toyota unveiled the sedan in 2014 and began Japanese sales that December, making it one of the first hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles mass-produced and sold commercially. Instead of burning hydrogen in an engine, the Mirai combines hydrogen with oxygen in a fuel-cell stack to generate electricity for its electric motor.

The reaction at the vehicle produces water, so the Mirai has no tailpipe carbon dioxide emissions during operation. It stores hydrogen in high-pressure tanks and can be refueled in a few minutes, although its practical usefulness depends heavily on the availability of hydrogen stations.

The Mirai is not a battery-electric car like the bZ4X, nor is it a hybrid like the Prius. Its powertrain is electric, but its electricity is generated onboard from hydrogen. Toyota introduced a second generation in 2020, changing the car to rear-wheel drive and improving its range, packaging, and performance.
