What does GR stand for in Toyota GR performance models?

Gazoo Racing began as Toyota’s motorsport and vehicle-development effort, with the name associated with Toyota’s racing activities and Nürburgring testing programs. Toyota later unified its motorsport operations under the Gazoo Racing identity and expanded the label to production performance cars.

The GR badge now appears on models such as the GR Supra, GR Yaris, GR86 and GR Corolla. These cars are intended to transfer lessons from competition and track development into road-going vehicles. Toyota also uses related designations: GR Sport generally denotes a sportier version of an existing model, while GRMN identifies higher-performance, limited-production variants.

GR is sometimes mistakenly expanded as “Grand Racing,” “Global Racing” or “Grip Racing,” but none of those is Toyota’s official meaning. Gazoo Racing is the single canonical answer, even though Toyota announced a future branding change from Toyota Gazoo Racing to Gazoo Racing.
