Toyota developed the Sports 800 from the Publica-based Publica Sports concept, which debuted at the 1962 Tokyo Motor Show. Production began in 1965, after Toyota increased the engine from 700 cc to 800 cc and added twin carburetors. The UP15 designation identifies this lightweight sports-car model.
The car was powered by a 790 cc, air-cooled, horizontally opposed two-cylinder engine. Its compact dimensions and low weight helped it deliver lively handling despite modest power. Toyota also used aluminum body panels and a removable roof section, an early example of the targa-style roof concept.
