What is the name of Tolkien’s invented writing system used for languages including Quenya and Sindarin?

The story behind the answer

Tengwar is Tolkien’s invented writing system used for languages including Quenya and Sindarin.

Tengwar, meaning “letters” in Quenya, is a script created by Tolkien for the languages of his fictional world. Its characters are often called tengwar individually. The script can represent different languages because its spelling conventions, or modes, change according to the sounds of the language being written.

In Tolkien’s mythology, the elf Fëanor devised the script in Valinor. Tolkien’s own examples include writing in Quenya, Sindarin, and English. The inscription on the One Ring is one of the best-known examples of Tengwar, although its language is the Black Speech of Mordor rather than an Elvish language.

Tengwar is frequently confused with Cirth. Cirth is a separate runic script associated especially with the dwarves, although other peoples also used it. Sarati is another earlier writing system in Tolkien’s invented history, making it a related but incorrect answer.
