What is the name of the world's tallest waterfall, located in a rainforest in Venezuela?

The story behind the answer

The world’s tallest waterfall, located in a rainforest in Venezuela, is Angel Falls.

Angel Falls descends from Auyán-tepui in Venezuela’s Canaima National Park. Its total height is about 979 metres, including cascades and rapids, while its uninterrupted plunge measures roughly 807 metres. That sheer drop makes it dramatically higher than Niagara Falls and one of the most spectacular landmarks in South America.

The waterfall lies in a remote rainforest region dominated by tepuis, ancient flat-topped mountains with steep cliffs and unusual ecosystems. Water flows from the Körepakupai Vená River into tributaries of the Orinoco system. Canaima National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

The English name honours Jimmie Angel, a U.S. aviator who flew over the falls in 1933. After a crash landing on Auyán-tepui in 1937, Angel and his companions had to hike off the mountain. The falls are also known by the Indigenous Pemón name Kerepakupai Vená.

“Tallest waterfall” can involve different measurement methods, but Angel Falls is the standard answer for the tallest uninterrupted waterfall.
