What is the name of the world's largest glacier by area?

The story behind the answer

Lambert Glacier is the world's largest glacier by area.

It lies in East Antarctica and flows northward through the Lambert Graben toward the Amery Ice Shelf and Prydz Bay. The glacier is about 435 kilometres long, roughly 96 kilometres wide, and reaches depths of approximately 2,500 metres. Its drainage system carries ice from a huge section of the East Antarctic ice sheet.

The feature was first delineated and named “Baker Three Glacier” by American geographer John H. Roscoe, using aerial photographs from Operation Highjump in 1946–47. The name Lambert Glacier became established after Australian mapping expeditions surveyed the region in 1956 and 1957. It honors Bruce P. Lambert, an Australian director of national mapping.

The other choices are major glaciers, but they have different distinctions. Byrd Glacier is one of Antarctica's fastest-moving ice streams, Totten Glacier is a major East Antarctic outlet, and Beardmore Glacier is a historic route from the Ross Ice Shelf toward the polar plateau. None is the standard answer to the largest-glacier question.
