What is the name of the wizarding sport created by J.K. Rowling that uses broomsticks and a Golden Snitch?

The story behind the answer

Quidditch is the wizarding sport created by J.K. Rowling that uses broomsticks and a Golden Snitch.

In the books, two teams of seven players compete on flying broomsticks. Chasers try to score through three hoops with the Quaffle, Beaters use bats to redirect dangerous Bludgers, and each team has a Seeker who pursues the Golden Snitch.

Catching the Snitch usually ends the match and awards the catching team 150 points, although it does not automatically determine the winner if the opposing team has a larger score. This scoring rule explains why Harry’s team can win or lose even when he catches the Snitch.

Quidditch was inspired partly by Rowling’s own experience of inventing games and by her playful approach to sports terminology. The fictional game later inspired real-world adaptations, including versions played on foot. Those real-world sports have changed rules and names, but Rowling’s original broomstick game remains the best-known form.
