The wizarding prison in the Harry Potter book series is called Azkaban.
Azkaban is a prison located on an island in the North Sea. The wizarding authorities use it to imprison people convicted of serious magical crimes. For much of the series, Dementors guard the prison, making it a place associated with fear, despair, and the loss of happy memories.
Sirius Black’s escape from Azkaban is one of the major events in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He is imprisoned there for crimes he did not commit, while the real betrayer, Peter Pettigrew, remains hidden for years.
Azkaban is not the same as Nurmengard, another wizarding prison associated with Gellert Grindelwald. Gringotts is a bank, and Malfoy Manor is the Malfoy family home. These locations are sometimes confused because all are connected with important wizarding characters.
