In the Harry Potter books, who created the Philosopher’s Stone?

The story behind the answer

Nicolas Flamel created the Philosopher’s Stone in the Harry Potter books.

The stone is a legendary alchemical object that can transform any metal into pure gold and produce the Elixir of Life. The elixir allows its drinker to live for an unusually long time, which explains why Flamel has survived for centuries by the time Harry encounters his story.

Flamel is not a Hogwarts professor or a central student character. He is a French alchemist and a friend of Albus Dumbledore. In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Dumbledore helps protect the stone at Hogwarts after learning that Lord Voldemort is trying to obtain it.

Readers sometimes confuse the Philosopher’s Stone with the Sorcerer’s Stone. “Philosopher’s Stone” is the title and terminology used in the original British editions, while “Sorcerer’s Stone” was used in the United States edition. Both refer to the same object and the same creator.
