Gandalf is the wizard who leads the Fellowship of the Ring in Tolkien’s story.
Gandalf forms the Fellowship in Rivendell after the Council of Elrond decides that the One Ring must be destroyed. The group includes Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, and Gimli.
He is one of the Istari, spirits sent to Middle-earth in the guise of old men to oppose Sauron. In The Lord of the Rings, Gandalf the Grey falls while fighting the Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm and returns as Gandalf the White.
Saruman is another wizard and initially holds greater authority among the Istari, but he becomes corrupted by his desire for power. Radagast is also an Istar, while Alatar belongs to the wider account of the Blue Wizards.
