What is the name of the wizard who guides the Fellowship in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

The wizard who guides the Fellowship in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is Gandalf.

Gandalf begins the story as Gandalf the Grey, a servant of the Valar sent to Middle-earth to oppose Sauron. He recognizes the danger of Bilbo’s ring and helps establish that it is the One Ring. At the Council of Elrond, Gandalf supports the plan to destroy it in Mount Doom.

During the journey, Gandalf confronts the Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm. After falling into the depths of Moria, he returns as Gandalf the White, with greater authority and a renewed role in the struggle against Sauron. He later helps unite the defenders of Minas Tirith and Rohan.

Saruman is also a wizard, but he betrays his mission and allies with Sauron. Radagast is another wizard who focuses more on animals and the natural world. Gandalf’s name in Tolkien’s original mythology is linked with the Maia Olórin.
