What is the name of the village where Bilbo Baggins lives in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

Bilbo Baggins lives in Hobbiton in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Hobbiton is a village in the Shire, the peaceful homeland of the Hobbits. It stands in the region known as the Westfarthing and is surrounded by the cultivated countryside, lanes, gardens, and smials that Tolkien uses to establish Hobbit life before Bilbo’s adventure begins.

Bilbo’s home, Bag End, is located on a hill overlooking Hobbiton. Gandalf visits Bag End at the start of The Hobbit, bringing the dwarves who recruit Bilbo for their journey to the Lonely Mountain. The same setting later appears in The Lord of the Rings when Frodo inherits Bag End.

Hobbiton is sometimes confused with the wider Shire or with Bag End. The Shire is the whole territory, Hobbiton is the village, and Bag End is Bilbo’s particular home. Tolkien’s descriptions of Hobbiton helped make the Shire one of the most recognizable locations in fantasy fiction.
