What is the name of the village where Bilbo and Frodo Baggins live in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth?

The story behind the answer

Hobbiton is the village where Bilbo and Frodo Baggins live in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

Hobbiton lies in the Shire, a settled region inhabited mainly by hobbits. Bilbo’s home, Bag End, is a comfortable hobbit-hole on a hill overlooking the village. Frodo inherits Bag End from Bilbo and begins The Lord of the Rings there before setting out with the One Ring.

Hobbiton is not the same as the Shire itself: the Shire is the wider country, while Hobbiton is one of its villages. It is also different from nearby Hobbiton-area settlements such as Bywater and Michel Delving. Tolkien presents the village as a peaceful, familiar community whose ordinary routines contrast with the dangers beyond its borders. In Peter Jackson’s film adaptations, Hobbiton was represented by a purpose-built set near Matamata in New Zealand, which later became a permanent visitor attraction.
