Fish pie is the traditional British savoury pie filled with fish in a creamy sauce.
Unlike many pastry-topped pies, classic fish pie is usually covered with mashed potato rather than a pastry crust. The filling commonly contains white fish such as cod, haddock or pollock, along with milk, butter, flour, parsley and sometimes prawns or eggs.
The dish is related to older British preparations that used fish, sauce and a baked topping. Its practical appeal comes from combining inexpensive fish with a substantial potato topping in one dish.
Fish pie should not be confused with stargazy pie, a Cornish specialty in which fish heads traditionally protrude through the pastry. Fish pie is generally served as a homestyle main course and has no single fixed recipe.
