The name of the toy cowboy in the movie Toy Story is Woody. Sheriff Woody Pride is a pull-string cowboy doll and the leader of Andy’s toys in Pixar’s Toy Story franchise.
Woody first appeared in Toy Story, released in 1995 as Pixar’s first feature-length computer-animated film. His traditional Western design includes a cowboy hat, yellow plaid shirt, cowhide vest, boots, and a pull-string voice box. Tom Hanks voices Woody in the main Toy Story films.
Woody’s importance goes beyond being a cowboy toy. In the first film, he feels threatened when Andy receives Buzz Lightyear, a space-themed action figure. Their rivalry eventually develops into one of the franchise’s central friendships. A common mix-up is choosing Buzz Lightyear, but Buzz is the astronaut-inspired toy, not the cowboy.
Toy Story 2 adds that Woody was once the star of the fictional 1950s television program Woody’s Roundup. His character was inspired partly by Western television and puppetry traditions, and his surname, Pride, was confirmed years after the original film.
