The town that Parks and Recreation is centered around is Pawnee.
Pawnee is a fictional town in Indiana and serves as the main setting for the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation. Much of the series follows Leslie Knope and her colleagues in Pawnee’s local government, especially the Parks and Recreation Department. The town’s eccentric history, rivalries, businesses, and residents provide the show’s central comic setting.
Pawnee is portrayed as a mid-sized city in fictional Wamapoke County, roughly 90 miles from Indianapolis. Its recurring locations include City Hall, JJ’s Diner, Ramsett Park, and the Snakehole Lounge. Eagleton, a wealthier neighboring town, is Pawnee’s frequent rival.
The fictional setting is sometimes confused with the real Pawnee people or real places named Pawnee. Also, although the story takes place in Indiana, the series was filmed mostly in Southern California. Pasadena City Hall was used for exterior shots of Pawnee’s government building, helping create the town’s distinctive visual identity.
