The telepathic vampire married to Bella Swan in the Twilight series is Edward Cullen. He is the central romantic hero of Stephenie Meyer's vampire saga and Bella later takes his surname, becoming Bella Cullen.
Edward's special ability is reading people's thoughts, although Bella is an important exception: her mind is shielded from him. This inability to read her thoughts helps distinguish their relationship from Edward's interactions with nearly everyone else and becomes a recurring source of mystery and tension.
Edward was born Edward Anthony Masen in 1901 and was transformed into a vampire in 1918 after becoming seriously ill during the Spanish influenza pandemic. Carlisle Cullen changed him to save his life, and Edward subsequently became part of the Cullen family. He appears physically seventeen despite being more than a century old when the story begins.
The marriage occurs in Breaking Dawn, the fourth novel in the original series, and the couple later have a daughter named Renesmee. Readers sometimes confuse Edward with Jacob Black, Bella's other major love interest; Jacob is a werewolf-associated shapeshifter, not the telepathic vampire.
