The talkative parrot in Disney’s Aladdin is Iago.
Iago first appeared in Walt Disney’s animated Aladdin in 1992 as the sharp-tongued sidekick of the villain Jafar. He is an anthropomorphic parrot who can speak fluently, imitate voices, and use his cleverness to help Jafar pursue power. His name is a reference to Iago, the scheming antagonist in William Shakespeare’s Othello.
In the original animated films, Iago was voiced by Gilbert Gottfried, whose loud, sarcastic delivery became one of the character’s defining features. Alan Tudyk voiced Iago in Disney’s 2019 live-action adaptation. The character’s design is generally associated with a red lory, while the live-action film depicts him as a red-and-green macaw.
Although Iago begins as a comic villain, later stories give him a more sympathetic and heroic role. In The Return of Jafar, he turns against Jafar and becomes more closely aligned with Aladdin and his friends. A common mix-up is confusing Iago with Abu, who is Aladdin’s thieving capuchin monkey companion.
