What is the name of the sun symbol on the flag of Argentina?
Answer
Sun of May
Answer
Sun of May
The sun symbol on the flag of Argentina is the Sun of May.
The Sun of May, or Sol de Mayo in Spanish, is a golden sun with a human face and 32 alternating straight and wavy rays. It is centered on the white stripe of Argentina’s ceremonial national flag. The emblem’s name connects it with the May Revolution of 1810, the political movement that began Argentina’s break from Spanish rule.
The design was based on the sun engraved on the first coin of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, approved in 1813. A sun was added to the flag in 1818, several years after Manuel Belgrano first raised the blue-and-white banner in 1812. The emblem is also widely associated with the Inca sun deity Inti, although that cultural interpretation is distinct from its official name, the Sun of May.
Argentina also uses a plain blue-and-white version for ornamental purposes. The version bearing the Sun of May is the Official Ceremonial Flag and is used for state and formal occasions.
