What is the name of the strait separating Spain from Morocco?

The story behind the answer

The Strait of Gibraltar is the narrow waterway separating Spain from Morocco. It connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and forms the maritime boundary between Europe and Africa.

At its narrowest point, the strait is about 14 kilometres wide. Its position has made it strategically important for navigation, military history, and trade since antiquity. The Rock of Gibraltar rises on the European side, while the Moroccan and Spanish coastlines frame the entrance to the Mediterranean.

The strait also has an important physical role: Atlantic water flows eastward near the surface, while denser Mediterranean water moves westward at depth. Geological evidence indicates that the connection has opened and closed during the distant past. Today, ferries link ports on both sides, and the route is one of the busiest passages between the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
