The program grew out of a backdoor pilot that aired as an eighth-season Arthur episode in December 2003. The standalone series premiered on PBS Kids Go! on October 11, 2004, and eventually ran for three seasons and 55 episodes.

Buster’s travels give the show a different format from Arthur. Animated sequences show Buster exploring each destination, while live-action segments introduce real children and families. At the end of a trip, Buster sends Arthur a video postcard describing what he learned.

The series visited places across the United States and abroad, including Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, and Egypt. Its educational focus was cultural discovery, family life, geography, and community traditions. It returned briefly in February 2012 after a hiatus, with previously unaired episodes.
