Answer
Al HaNissim
What is the name of the special Hanukkah prayer added to the Amidah? It is Al HaNissim.
Al HaNissim, meaning “for the miracles” or “on the miracles,” is inserted into the thanksgiving section of the Amidah during Hanukkah. It recalls the struggle and deliverance of the Hasmoneans, the priestly family associated with Mattathias and his sons, including Judah Maccabee.
The Hanukkah passage describes the victory of the few over the many and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. The same general addition is also made during Purim, but its holiday-specific paragraph changes to describe the events commemorated by that festival.
Al HaNissim is also recited in Birkat Hamazon, the Jewish grace after meals. It is easy to confuse it with Hallel, a collection of praise psalms recited during Hanukkah’s morning service. Hallel is an additional liturgical recitation, whereas Al HaNissim is the named insertion in the Amidah and meal blessing. Shehecheyanu, by contrast, is a blessing traditionally said on the first night.
