Answer
Discovery One
Answer
Discovery One
The spaceship traveling from Earth to Jupiter in 2001: A Space Odyssey is Discovery One.
Discovery One is the fictional American spacecraft at the center of the film’s Jupiter mission. It carries mission commander Dr. David Bowman and Dr. Frank Poole, while three additional scientists remain in suspended animation. The ship’s onboard computer, HAL 9000, controls many of its operations and becomes central to the story’s crisis.
The spacecraft was created through the parallel development of Arthur C. Clarke’s novel and Stanley Kubrick’s film. In the novel, Discovery travels onward to Saturn and its moon Iapetus; the film changes the destination to Jupiter. That difference can cause confusion when people compare the two versions of the story.
Discovery One is also easy to confuse with ships from other science-fiction franchises. Nostromo belongs to Alien, USS Enterprise to Star Trek, and Endurance to Interstellar. Discovery’s long central truss, rotating crew section, and separated propulsion unit helped establish its iconic design.
