How many Academy Awards did Dr. Strangelove win?

The story behind the answer

Dr. Strangelove won zero Academy Awards.

At the 37th Academy Awards in 1965, the film received four nominations: Best Picture, Best Director for Stanley Kubrick, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Peter Sellers. It did not win in any of those categories.

The absence of an Oscar win is easy to confuse with the film’s success elsewhere. Dr. Strangelove won three BAFTA Awards, including Best Film from Any Source, Best British Film, and Best Art Direction in Black and White. It also won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and several critics’ honors.

The film’s Oscar record is also distinct from Kubrick’s career record. Kubrick eventually won his sole competitive Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey, released four years later. Dr. Strangelove remains one of the most acclaimed films never to win an Oscar.
