Discovery One is the spacecraft commanded by Dave Bowman in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The Discovery mission travels toward Jupiter, carrying astronauts Dave Bowman and Frank Poole along with the supercomputer HAL 9000 and three hibernating scientists. The ship’s long, rotating centrifuge section visually communicates how artificial gravity could be created during deep-space travel.
Discovery One is sometimes confused with the film’s smaller Orion spaceplanes and lunar vehicles, which appear earlier in the story. It is also distinct from Discovery Two, a later ship associated with the sequel novel and film 2010: The Year We Make Contact.
The spacecraft’s design was created for the film by production designer Harry Lange, with technical consultation from scientists and engineers. Its clean white interiors, rotating ring, and long central spine became defining images of cinematic science fiction.
