Our Town is the song from Pixar's Cars that received an Academy Award nomination. Randy Newman wrote the song, which appears during a reflective sequence about Radiator Springs and its changing fortunes.
The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the 79th Academy Awards. It did not win; the award went to “I Need to Wake Up” from An Inconvenient Truth, written and performed by Melissa Etheridge.
Newman composed the score for Cars as well as several songs connected with the film. His music helps contrast the speed and spectacle of the Piston Cup with the quieter history of Radiator Springs.
“Life Is a Highway,” performed by Rascal Flatts, is another famous song associated with Cars, but it was not the film's Oscar-nominated song. That distinction belongs to “Our Town,” whose lyrics emphasize memory, community, and change.
