What is the name of the skincare procedure that uses a device to exfoliate with crystals?

The story behind the answer

The skincare procedure that uses a device to exfoliate with crystals is microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment that mechanically removes some of the outermost dead skin cells. Traditional systems propel fine crystals—often aluminum oxide—across the skin while suction removes the crystals and loosened skin debris. Newer systems may use a roughened diamond tip instead of loose crystals.

The first microdermabrasion unit was developed in Italy in 1985, and the technique reached the United States in the 1990s. Treatments are commonly used to temporarily improve the appearance of superficial sun damage, uneven pigmentation, fine lines, and shallow acne scars. A session usually requires little or no recovery time.

Microdermabrasion is milder than dermabrasion, which is a deeper surgical resurfacing procedure. It is also different from a chemical peel, which exfoliates through acids or other chemicals, and laser resurfacing, which uses concentrated light energy. Because treated skin can be more sun-sensitive, post-treatment sun protection matters.
