Il Giudizio Universale
Answer
Il Giudizio Universale
The Sistine Chapel’s famous altar-wall fresco is called Il Giudizio Universale in Italian. The English title is The Last Judgment. Michelangelo painted it between 1536 and 1541 for the altar wall of the chapel.
The composition shows Christ judging humanity at the end of time. The Virgin Mary appears beside him, while saints and other figures surround the central group. The resurrected dead rise from their graves, and the damned descend toward Hell. The fresco contains hundreds of figures arranged in a turbulent, unified scene.
The work caused controversy because many figures were shown nude. After Michelangelo’s death, Daniele da Volterra painted fabric additions over some bodies, earning him the nickname “Il Braghettone,” or “the breeches maker.” Later restoration removed some additions while preserving historically significant changes.
