Radiohead drummer Phil Selway released his 2010 solo project, the album Familial.
Familial was Selway’s debut solo studio album, released in the United Kingdom on August 30, 2010. It revealed a side of the musician that Radiohead listeners had rarely heard: Selway sang, played acoustic guitar, and wrote intimate folk-influenced songs rather than serving primarily as a drummer in an experimental rock band.
The project grew partly from Selway’s songwriting and from his involvement with Neil Finn’s 7 Worlds Collide collective. Several collaborators joined him on Familial, including Wilco musicians Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone, along with Lisa Germano and Sebastian Steinberg. The album’s restrained arrangements and reflective mood drew comparisons to singer-songwriters such as Nick Drake.
