The scientist Phoebe dates in Friends is named David.
David, played by Hank Azaria, is a physicist whom Phoebe meets at Central Perk. Their first date is interrupted when David receives a research opportunity in Minsk and leaves for scientific work, making their relationship one of Phoebe’s recurring romantic stories.
David returns several times, including during Phoebe’s relationships with other men. His scientific career and gentle personality contrast with some of Phoebe’s more eccentric traits. The character becomes part of the emotional competition surrounding Phoebe, Mike Hannigan and her other romantic interests.
David is often confused with Mike, the musician whom Phoebe eventually marries, or with Duncan, Phoebe’s former ice dancer husband. Hank Azaria also played other Friends characters, including the dog-voiced singer in “The One with the Morning After” and Phoebe’s ex-boyfriend David.
