Canadarm2 is the robotic arm installed on the International Space Station in 2001.
Officially called the Space Station Remote Manipulator System, Canadarm2 was launched aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour during mission STS-100 in April 2001. The Canadian-built system is used to move equipment, support astronauts during spacewalks, and capture visiting spacecraft.
Unlike the original Canadarm used on the Space Shuttle, Canadarm2 can move along the station’s exterior using powered fixtures and a mobile transporter. It can also “walk” from one attachment point to another by moving its end effectors.
Canadarm2 is often confused with Dextre, the smaller two-armed robotic manipulator attached to the station. The original Canadarm is also different: it was a shuttle-mounted arm, while Canadarm2 was designed specifically for long-term station operations.
