What is the name of the river often called the 'Cradle of Chinese Civilization'?
Answer
Yellow River
Answer
Yellow River
The Yellow River is often called the “Cradle of Chinese Civilization” because its basin supported some of the earliest large-scale agricultural communities and states in ancient China. In Chinese, it is known as the Huang He.
The river flows across northern China from the Tibetan Plateau to the Bohai Sea. Its basin contains extensive deposits of windblown loess, a fine, mineral-rich soil that could produce fertile farmland. Neolithic cultures such as Yangshao and Longshan developed in this broader region, followed by the Shang and Zhou civilizations.
The Yellow River has also been notoriously destructive. Its heavy sediment load raises the riverbed, contributing to floods and dramatic changes in course. For this reason, it has earned the contrasting nicknames “China’s Mother River” and “China’s Sorrow.”
Calling it the sole birthplace of Chinese civilization can oversimplify history. Important early cultures also flourished along the Yangtze and in other regions. The Yellow River is best understood as one crucial center of early Chinese civilization, not the only source of China’s cultural development.
