What is the name of the Rio Carnival parade avenue commonly called the Sambadrome?
Answer
Avenida Marquês de Sapucaí
Answer
Avenida Marquês de Sapucaí
The Rio Carnival parade avenue commonly called the Sambadrome is Avenida Marquês de Sapucaí.
The avenue forms the central performance route of Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí, Rio de Janeiro’s permanent venue for the major samba-school parades. It runs through the downtown area and is lined with purpose-built spectator stands and judging structures.
The site was inaugurated in 1984, replacing temporary arrangements used for earlier major parades. Its official name honors Cândido José de Araújo Viana, the Marquês de Sapucaí, a nineteenth-century Brazilian statesman.
Avenida Marquês de Sapucaí is sometimes confused with the name of the entire complex. Strictly speaking, the avenue is the parade route, while the Sambadrome refers to the broader venue surrounding it. In everyday English, however, “Sambadrome” is commonly used for both.
