What is the name of the ring-making script used by the Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional world?

The story behind the answer

Tengwar is the ring-making script used by the Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional world.

Tengwar is a writing system devised by the Elf Fëanor in Tolkien’s legendarium. Its name means “letters” in Quenya. The script is used for several languages, including Quenya and Sindarin, and it can represent different languages through adapted modes.

The inscription on the One Ring is written in Tengwar characters, but the language of the inscription is Black Speech. The famous lines beginning “Ash nazg durbatulûk” therefore should not be described as Elvish language merely because their letters look Elvish.

Cirth is another Tolkien writing system, made from angular runes and associated especially with the Dwarves, although other peoples also use it. Sarati is an earlier script created by Tolkien’s fictional Elf Rúmil. Angerthas refers to an arrangement or extension of rune forms, making it distinct from Tengwar.
