What is the name of the region where the original Pokémon games are set?

The story behind the answer

The original Pokémon games are set in the Kanto region.

Kanto is the setting for Pokémon Red, Green, Blue and Yellow, as well as their later remakes Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. The region contains familiar locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City, Celadon City and the Indigo Plateau.

Its geography was loosely inspired by the real Kantō region of Japan, including the area around Tokyo. Pokémon’s Kanto is redesigned as a game world, with routes, caves, seas and towns arranged for exploration and progression through the Gym challenge.

Kanto is sometimes confused with Johto because the two regions are connected in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal. Kanto is the original region, while Johto was introduced in Generation II. The name also differs from the real-world region’s usual spelling, which is commonly written Kantō in English-language geographic references.
