New Hormones
Answer
New Hormones
The record label founded by the Buzzcocks in 1977 was New Hormones.
New Hormones was established in Manchester by Richard Boon, Howard Devoto, and Pete Shelley. Although often described as the Buzzcocks’ label, its founders were closely connected to the band rather than the entire group acting as a formal corporate entity.
Its first release was the Buzzcocks’ Spiral Scratch EP, issued in January 1977. The band reportedly borrowed £500 from friends and family to finance it. An initial run of 1,000 copies quickly sold out, and the EP eventually sold about 16,000 copies through mail order and record shops.
New Hormones became one of Britain’s earliest independent punk labels. After the Buzzcocks signed with United Artists, the label continued releasing records by acts including Ludus, Dislocation Dance, Eric Random, and the Diagram Brothers. It ceased operating in late 1982.
