Brett Gurewitz founded the punk record label Epitaph Records. Gurewitz, the guitarist of Bad Religion, established the label in Los Angeles in 1981 as an outlet for releasing the band’s music.

Epitaph later expanded beyond Bad Religion and became one of the most important independent labels in punk. Its roster included influential acts such as NOFX, Rancid, The Offspring, Pennywise, and Social Distortion. The label’s success helped bring independent punk into a much larger international market during the 1990s.
